A school-bus company runs on more than one kind of screen. Dispatch works at a desk — a Mac or a Windows PC — while drivers live on their phones, and the owner checks in from whichever is nearest. Fleet software that only feels at home on one of them gets left in a browser tab nobody can find at 6 a.m.
FleetCommander isn't in the App Store or Google Play — it runs in the browser. But every modern browser can install it like an app: it gets its own icon, opens in a window of its own without the address bar, and is always the latest version. Here's why that's a good fit for a bus company, and how to do it on each device.
Why not an app-store app?
- Nothing to download or update. Drivers never have to update anything before a route — open it and it's the current version, the same one the office sees.
- Any phone works. iPhone or Android, new or old, company phone or the driver's own — no app store account, no storage to free up.
- One sign-in, one place. The office, the drivers and the owner use the same FleetCommander, with what each role can see.
- It still feels like an app. Installed, it has its own icon and window, and it's one tap or click away.
On a Mac
- Open FleetCommander in Chrome or Microsoft Edge.
- Click the Install app icon at the right end of the address bar — a computer screen with a down arrow — then Install.
- To keep it handy, right-click its icon in the Dock › Options › Keep in Dock.
Prefer Safari? On macOS Sonoma or later, choose File › Add to Dock.
On a Windows PC
- Open FleetCommander in Microsoft Edge or Chrome.
- Click the Install icon in the address bar (Edge says App available), or Edge's menu ⋯ › Apps › Install this site as an app.
- Right-click its icon on the taskbar › Pin to taskbar, so dispatch opens it with one click every morning.
On an Android phone
- Open FleetCommander in Chrome.
- Open the menu (⋮) and choose Install app — drivers also see a tip with a button at the top of My Day.
- Tap Install; the icon lands on the home screen.
On an iPhone or iPad
- Open FleetCommander in Safari.
- Tap Share — the square with an arrow pointing up.
- Choose Add to Home Screen, then Add.
Tip: Rolling it out to drivers? Show it at the next safety meeting: everyone opens the site, installs it, and signs in once while you're in the room. From then on, My Day — their routes, pre-trip inspection and messages from the office — is one tap away.
What drivers get on their phone
Installed, FleetCommander opens straight on My Day: today's routes and stops, the pre-trip inspection, messages from the office, and — where the company uses it — clocking in. When a route changes, the driver is told. The full walkthrough, with every step and picture, is in the free Guide: Install FleetCommander as an app.
Good to know: For safety, FleetCommander still asks you to sign in each time you open it — closing it signs you out, just as in the browser.
