FleetCommander vs Fleetio for school buses

Fleetio is excellent maintenance software for any fleet. FleetCommander is built for school-bus companies. What each does, what each costs, and which fits your buses.

The FleetCommander team4 min read

Fleetio is one of the best-known fleet maintenance platforms — about 6,000 customers and more than a million vehicles across every kind of fleet, and it has a page for school buses. FleetCommander is built only for school-bus and student-transportation companies. Both are software only (no hardware needed), both are priced per vehicle, and both publish their prices — so the comparison comes down to what your day looks like.

We make FleetCommander. Fleetio's facts below come from its own pricing and product pages, checked on October 16, 2026.

In one minute

  • Choose Fleetio if maintenance is the job: a busy shop, work orders with parts and labor, tires, warranties, telematics feeds and detailed cost reports across a mixed fleet.
  • Choose FleetCommander if you run school routes: drivers and aides, routes with stops and students, inspections and attendance on the driver's phone, and invoices to school districts — with maintenance and parts built in.

Where Fleetio is stronger

  • Maintenance depth. Fleetio's Premium plan adds service programs with automations, parts with purchase orders, tire management, warranty tracking, labor clock-in and an AI data analyst. If your shop is the centre of your business, Fleetio goes further than FleetCommander does.
  • Integrations. Fuel and telematics integrations on every plan, and an API on Professional and Premium.
  • Price per vehicle. At $4 to $10 per vehicle a month (annual), Fleetio costs less per bus — for maintenance alone.
  • Scale. More than a million vehicles run on it.

Where FleetCommander is stronger

  • Everything that isn't maintenance. Routes, students, aides, the driver's day, student and driver attendance, and district invoices are what a school-bus company runs on — Fleetio doesn't cover them, so you'd need a second system and to keep the two in step.
  • One price for all of it. $10.99 per vehicle a month includes every feature: 10 buses cost $109.90 a month, 25 cost $274.75. On Fleetio's Essential plan, work orders and parts aren't included; Professional and Premium are billed annually only.
  • Papers for drivers and aides. CDL and medical card dates, aide background checks and child abuse clearances, and the bus's registration and insurance — each with reminders, and a weekly summary of anything missing.
  • Month to month. No annual commitment.

What about Samsara?

Samsara is often the other name on the list. It's a different kind of product: telematics hardware on every bus — GPS, AI dash cams, student ID card readers — with inspections and driver time in its app. It's sold by quote, and its annual report says contracts are typically three to five years and generally non-cancelable. If you need live tracking and cameras, Samsara (or Zonar) is the tool; it can sit alongside software that runs your routes, drivers and billing.

Which should you pick?

If your buses are only one part of a larger mixed fleet and the shop drives everything, Fleetio is a strong choice. If you're a school-bus company — your work is routes for districts — FleetCommander covers maintenance well enough for most contractor shops and the routes, people and billing around it. Try it with your own buses for 14 days: start a free trial.

Good to know: Fleetio's prices are from fleetio.com/pricing on October 16, 2026: they depend on plan, fleet size, contract term and payment term, and the figures shown assume a 5-vehicle annual plan. Check Fleetio for a current quote.
