FleetCommander vs BusBoss: which fits a school bus contractor?

BusBoss and FleetCommander both serve school-bus contractors. A side-by-side look at routing, billing districts, what drivers use, GPS, pricing and trials — with sources.

The FleetCommander team4 min read

BusBoss and FleetCommander are two of the few products that name private school-bus contractors as a customer — not only school districts. They come at the job from different ends: BusBoss started as routing software and grew around it; FleetCommander runs the contractor's day — buses, drivers, aides, inspections, maintenance and billing the districts — and leaves route planning to you.

We make FleetCommander, so everything about BusBoss below comes from BusBoss's own website, checked on October 16, 2026.

In one minute

  • Choose BusBoss if you plan and optimise routes yourself — tiering, special-needs routing, redistricting — want a parent app with bus ETAs, or need GPS from Geotab, Zonar or CalAmp devices tied into your routing.
  • Choose FleetCommander if your districts hand you the routes and what you need is everything around them in one app — drivers' and aides' papers, inspections on the driver's phone, maintenance and parts, student and driver attendance, and monthly district invoices counted from each school's calendar — at a published price, with a free trial.

Where BusBoss is stronger

  • Routing. Optimisation, special-needs routing, transfers, split custody and redistricting are BusBoss's home ground. FleetCommander doesn't optimise routes.
  • Parents and GPS. BusBoss has a parent app with ETAs and GPS that works with the devices many fleets already have. FleetCommander has neither.
  • Student information systems. BusBoss syncs with PowerSchool and eSchool and does state DOE reporting.
  • Track record. BusBoss has been around for more than 25 years.

Where FleetCommander is stronger

  • Billing districts from the calendar. Each school has its own calendar — holidays filled in, snow days added as they happen — and each month's invoice counts every route's real school days. On BusBoss's site we found billing reports and cost sharing between districts, but not invoices counted from school calendars.
  • The driver's day on their own phone. No tablets to buy or set up: drivers see their routes, do inspections with photos, mark students, clock in and message the office from their phone.
  • Papers for everyone. Drivers, aides and buses each have their documents and dates, with reminders before anything runs out — and a weekly summary of anything never added, like a missing SSN or VIN.
  • A price you can see. $10.99 per vehicle a month with every feature and unlimited users — 10 buses cost $109.90 a month — and a 14-day trial with no card.

What it costs

BusBoss doesn't publish a price list: its plan chart says Request a Quote. Its own comparison page gives "illustrative" figures — routing at $2 to $5 per student for small districts, starting at $3,840 a year, and $7,340 to $8,840 a year for a sample 45-bus district — and its Express edition is listed at $1,995. GPS hardware and cellular data are extra.

FleetCommander is $10.99 per vehicle a month, no monthly minimum and no setup fee: 25 buses cost $274.75 a month, 50 cost $549.50. Every feature is included, there's no contract, and sales tax is added where it applies. See Pricing.

Can you use both?

Yes. If you plan routes in BusBoss (or a district gives you routes from its own routing software), FleetCommander can run everything around them: import your routes from a spreadsheet, then let drivers, inspections, maintenance and district billing run from there.

Good to know: Facts about BusBoss come from busboss.com and its Capterra listing, checked October 16, 2026; BusBoss describes its price figures as illustrative. Ask BusBoss for a current quote.
